EU Commissioner for International Development gets green light from MEP
4th February, 2010MEPs on the International Development Committee which coordinates the EU’s response to incidents such as the Haiti disaster have quizzed the latest candidate for the position of Commissioner of International Co-operation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva. Emma McClarkin MEP attended and after asking several challenging questions was impressed by Georgieva’s insightful answers and shrewd understanding of the EU’s role in delivering world aid.
Miss McClarkin questions were centred on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and how they can be monitored closer by the Commission and also Georgieva’s background as vice president of the World Bank. The BBC described these questions as “the best of the day”.
The East Midlands MEP Emma McClarkin believes that after Georgieva’s performance that this she is the right person for the job after MEPs were unimpressed with the previous candidate Rumiana Jeleva.

“The EU is the largest donator of aid in the world which makes the job of the Commissioner of International Co-operation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response an extremely important position.
“From today’s hearing Kristalina Georgieva sustained prolonged and robust questioning and showed experience and passion for humanitarian aid.
“I am pleased to say that finally we have found a Commissioner to co-ordinate the much needed aid around the world to assist those who are most in need, such as the Haiti survivors.”
