Time to make a noise as clock is ticking for Horse Declaration, says MEP

World Horse Welfare is campaigning for a European Parliament review of the long distance transportation of horses to slaughter.  The WHW need at least 50% of MEPs to support their declaration and East Midlands Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin, pictured signing in September 2009, is concerned that not enough MEPs will do so by Thursday’s deadline.

Each year, 100,000 horses are transported across Europe for slaughter.  The horses have to endure horrific conditions on long journeys which results in disease, dehydration, exhaustion and injury.

This is all needless as there is an infrastructure in place which can make slaughter at source and a carcase trade possible.

Currently, both Conservative MEPs for the East Midlands have signed the declaration along with the Labour MEP but the region’s UKIP and Liberal Democrat MEP have not.  It is not too late to ask them to sign and any constituents who are concerned that World Horse Welfare will not gain enough MEP signatures can find their contact details at http://www.europarl.org.uk/section/your-meps/your-meps to get in touch.

Emma McClarkin MEP comments from Strasbourg:

“Horse welfare is an issue I feel very passionate about.”

“I will be encouraging my colleagues from all over the EU to sign this declaration and put this issue on the Parliament’s agenda.”
