Health inequalities a tragedy and a burden to Member States and the EU, says Conservative MEP
26th October, 2010East Midlands MEP, Emma McClarkin, held her first exchange of views in the European Parliament today – discussing her report for the Internal Market committee on reducing health inequalities across the EU.
The report forms part of legislation that seeks to highlight and address the causes and practical consequences of the varying health levels of EU citizens. Proposals for action in these areas include exchange of best practice, better data collection, meeting the needs of the most vulnerable groups in society, and ensuring medical practitioners are qualified to work across the EU.
During the discussion Miss McClarkin pointed out that health inequalities are, in many cases, avoidable and tragic. In addition, in Europe they represent a substantial burden to Member States and their healthcare systems – costing some £60 billion per year to the UK alone in lost productivity, additional burdens on welfare payments and extra cost to the NHS.
Speaking after the exchange of views, Miss McClarkin said:
“We must bear in mind that taking action to reduce inequalities in health does not require a separate health agenda, but action across the whole of society and the economy to assist those most in need.”
“I also believe that open, competitive and well functioning Markets stimulate investment and research in healthcare and may help in identifying effective healthcare models for Member States.”
“I will look to address all these aspects in my report and very much look forward to tackling what is clearly a crucial issue.”
