Emma McClarkin MEP urges Romeos to check their diamonds
8th February, 2011With thousands of budding Romeos thinking of getting down on one knee this coming Valentine’s day, Local Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin has urged them to check that any diamonds being bought are part of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.
The scheme exists to prevent ‘blood diamonds’ from entering the market.
In a statement, the East Midlands MEP said,
“Romeos all over the UK will be thinking of popping the question or just buying something special for their loved one. This usually means diamonds, but do they know where those diamonds have come from?
“Nobody would want to buy an expression of love that was tainted with blood, or whose sale is funding a civil war or a despotic regime.
“That why I’m urging all Romeos and Casanovas, as we get closer to February 14th, to check that any diamonds that they are thinking of buying are part of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.
“Nobody wants to be a killjoy, but equally nobody should want to buy a blood diamond.”
