Emma McClarkin MEP calls for closer trade links on Commonwealth Day
11th March, 2011East Midlands Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin has today called for stronger trade links with Commonwealth countries.
Miss McClarkin’s call coincides with Commonwealth Day, the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations which traditionally falls on the second Monday of March.
The theme for 2011 is ‘Women as Agents of Change’, and commenting on this, Miss McClarkin said, “Women are becoming ever more influential in all walks of life, and by celebrating this on Commonwealth Day and raising awareness of things that still need to be done, everyone can benefit.”
A multi-faith observance will be held today at Westminster Abbey in London, attended by both HM The Queen, and Heads of Government and faith leaders from around the world.
Miss McClarkin added, “I believe that we need to strengthen and build on our Commonwealth links when looking at our economic recovery and the future for trade links for the UK.
“Commonwealth Day is an annual reminder of our close links to countries elsewhere in the world, and it is an ideal opportunity to strengthen trade between us.”
