Emma McClarkin MEP congratulates England Rugby teams on winning 6 Nations tournaments
22nd March, 2011East Midlands Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin has today congratulated the Mens and Womens England Rugby Union teams for victories in their respective 6 Nations tournaments.
Emma – who is the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) spokenswoman for Education and Sport – sent her congratulations after watching the final Mens matches on Saturday, which despite England’s 24-8 loss to Ireland, saw them win the tournament after France beat Wales 28-9.
The final Womens matches saw the opposite result for England, with them emphatically beating Ireland 31-0 to win the Grand Slam for the third year running.
Emma has been a huge Rugby fan since she was young, and worked for the RFU from 2008 to 2009.
Speaking following the victories, Emma said:
“I’m really thrilled that the men have won the cup for the first time in 8 years. It’s a shame that they didn’t manage to get the Grand Slam as well, but it’s still a fantastic achievement.
“The whole team has played with a new vigour, and I’m sure that Martin Johnson is rightly proud of his boys. Winning the 6 Nations is a real boost and puts England’s men in a good position ahead of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand this September.
“I’d also like to congratulate the Womens team for winning their tournament for the 6th time in a row. To have only 8 points scored against them in the entire tournament is a stunning achievement, and one which will not be forgotten.”
