East Midlands MEP Emma McClarkin is once again teaming up with fellow Conservative politician Andrew Bingham – the MP for High Peak – to tackle the Peak District on another ‘High Peak Hike’.

This year’s hike will have a ‘Roman Ramble’ theme, as Emma and Andrew follow the path of Roman Roads in north Derbyshire, from Glossop to Brough, then down to Buxton.

The pair have done three of the hikes in previous years for local charities, and will be attempting their fourth hike in August this year. Previous hikes have seem them tackle the 3 highest peaks in the area, as well as the four points of the compass.

The Roman-themed hike will see the intrepid duo setting off from the Roman-age fort of Melandra (named ‘Ardotalia’ – The place of the high dark hill – by the Romans1) near Gamesley in Glossop, walking through Glossop before following the old Roman Road out past Old Glossop and up through Doctor’s Gate.

A trek east and south along the Roman Road will see them arrive at the old Roman fort of ‘Navio’ – The place on the river2 – in the small village of Brough, near Hope. They will then follow the Roman Road south-west to Buxton (which the Romans called ‘Aquae Arnemetiae’ – The Spa-town of the Sacred Groves3) walking through the town centre before finishing their journey at St. Ann’s Well in the centre of Buxton.

Speaking about the hike, Emma said:

“I really enjoy walking in the Peak District, so I’m really glad we’ve arranged another hike. I’m sure it will be a hard slog in parts, but it’ll be worth it to raise the money for charity, and I hope a lot of people sponsor us.”

Andrew added:

“I’m really glad that we’re doing another hike this year, although it was a lot harder to find space in my diary for it this year! I’m looking forward to it a lot, and I hope we raise a lot of money for charity.”
