Emma McClarkin MEP Supports ‘Save Roman Southwell’ campaign
2nd August, 2011East Midlands MEP Emma McClarkin has this week given her support to the ‘Save Roman Southwell’ campaign to stop housing being built on the former Minster School site in Southwell.
Caunton Properties Ltd have put forward a plan to build 27 properties on the old Minster School site, which is also the site of historic Roman remains. The campaign is fighting against the proposals, and wants the site to be preserved as a national amenity.
Speaking in support of the campaign, Emma said:
“I fully support the efforts of this campaign to save the Roman remains in Southwell, and I’m pleased to add my name to the list of supporters.
“The whole site is an important part of our East Midlands Heritage, some of which would be lost if this development is allowed.”
Organisations involved with the ‘Save Roman Southwell’ campaign are Southwell Community Archaeology Group, Southwell & District Local History Society, Southwell Civic Society and Southwell Heritage Trust.
The campaign also has the support of Southwell Town Council, Patrick Mercer OBE MP, Cllr Bruce Laughton, Dr Ian W Campell, and The Dean and Chapter of Southwell Minster.
