Emma McClarkin MEP questions European Commission over horsemeat scandal

Following the ‘horsemeat in food’ scandal that has swept Europe, East Midlands MEP Emma McClarkin has sent a written question about the issue to the European Commission.

Miss McClarkin has asked the Commission what actions it will be taking to ensure that traceability information is available in meat production.

The full question is as follows:

Following the recent horsemeat scandal which has caused outrage across Europe, it is clearer than ever that consumers should have better information about the meat products they are buying, including how the meat is produced.

Given that the Commission places a large emphasis on animal welfare and the role of consumers, can the Commission tell me what actions it will be taking to ensure that full traceability information is available in meat production for the benefit of the consumer?

After tabling the question, Miss McClarkin said:

“The recent horsemeat scandal has outraged millions of consumers – not just in the UK, but across Europe. It is vitally important that elected representatives take whatever action is needed to ensure that food producers cannot do something similar in future.

“I am doing everything I can on behalf of the people of the East Midlands to raise this up the political agenda in Europe, and this written question is part of that. I await the Commission’s response with interest.”
