Declaration on the global fight against child sexual abuse images online, authored by Emma McClarkin MEP

East Midlands Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin has recently authored a Written Declaration in the European Parliament, which highlights the global dimension of the fight against online child sexual abuse images.

While much work has been done in the European Union to tackle child sexual abuse images online, the same cannot be said worldwide. Through organising this Written Declaration and attracting co-authors to support the cause, Miss McClarkin is showing her support for efforts to implement a worldwide system against such images, which would be more effective in combatting a crime which easily transcends borders.

The Written Declaration has been circulated around members of the European Parliament and it is hoped that more than half will sign in order to bring the matter to the attention of the European Commission.

Miss McClarkin said:
“Whilst I’m delighted that Europe has worked hard to tackle this terrible abuse, unfortunately there is not yet worldwide cooperation in place. The cross-border nature of most online child sexual abuse content shows the urgent need for international co-operation.

“The most effective way to stop such online content is to remove the source of it, and this needs to be done in co-operation with law enforcement agencies in the relevant countries.

“I’m calling on the European Commission to think of developing countries as well as developed ones when establishing this international co-operation.”
