Local MEP urges people to Get Caught Reading this week

A local MEP has been caught absorbed in a book this week – as part of the ‘Get Caught Reading’ exhibition at the European Parliament, which aims to promote reading as a gateway to opportunity.

As part of the exhibition and campaign, Local MEP Emma McClarkin was photographed reading one of her favourite books, Love in the Time of Cholera by Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez. The photo will be one of many in the exhibition to show members of the European Parliament reading, along with a brief text for each, explaining why reading is important to them.

The campaign has two main purposes: to promote and celebrate reading by people across Europe and to increase the importance of books and reading on the political agenda.

Miss McClarkin, who represents the East Midlands in the European Parliament, wants the exhibition to inspire people to read more, and to recognise the value of books in learning and gaining new opportunities.

She said:

“I absolutely love to read, and I’m delighted to back this fantastic campaign which aims to get more people reading.

“Losing yourself in a book is like escaping into another world. When reading your senses soak everything in and fires your imagination. It is important we make time to stop, learn and reflect. Reading is perfect for that.

“Love in the time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is my favourite book. I have read it many times and pore over the beauty on every page. He weaves such beautiful tapestries with his words – his whole world comes to life with sounds and smells. It is a story about love, life and hope. Totally evocative every time.

“I would urge everyone this week to either start reading a new book, or start re-reading an old book you love – you never know how it might inspire you!”
