Emma McClarkin MEP condemns Juncker ‘stitch-up’ as MEPs prepare to confirm him as Commission President

East Midlands Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin has today condemned as a ‘federalist stitch-up’ Jean-Claude Juncker’s likely accession to President of the European Commission later this month.

Miss McClarkin made the comments in advance of the vote by MEPs on 14 July which will likely confirm Mr Juncker as the next President of the European Commission. Her comments come following the UK Prime Minister’s public opposition to the deal.

Mr Juncker is the former Prime Minister of Luxembourg, and is widely considered to be a Federalist candidate who will support and push for the principle of ‘ever-closer union’ of EU member states.

In advance of the vote next Monday, Miss McClarkin said:

“It’s the same old men, same old vision, same old story.

“Next week, MEPs will complete the federalist stitch-up which will see Jean-Claude Juncker become President of the European Commission, when we vote in the European Parliament.

“I and my fellow Conservative MEPs will not be voting for Mr Juncker, but the fact is that the vote is merely a formality, as MEPs from other countries will vote for Mr Juncker and everything he represents – more of the same old Europe, an ever-closer union, and a failure to listen to the electorate or even to acknowledge them.

“Rest assured though, that myself and my fellow Conservative MEPs will continue to fight tooth-and-nail for British interests and against the all-pervasive creeping federalisation of the EU.

“We need real reform not the same old story from EU.”
