12th July, 2012Emma McClarkin, Conservative MEP for the East Midlands, this week hosted an exhibition and reception in the European Parliament to highlight the value of the Olympic Games to the United Kingdom.
Miss McClarkin is the Conservative Spokesperson for Culture, Education and Sport in the European Parliament. At the reception she welcomed the many people who attended, and said that it showed how much enthusiasm there is for the Olympics.
Attending the reception along with Miss McClarkin were Sir Jon Cunliffe, UK Permanent Representation to the EU; Ambassador Jonathan Brenton; Yvonne Van Bets, former Belgian gymnast who competed at the 1948 Olympic Games in London; the Deputy Mayor of London, Lady Victoria Borwick; and Richard Walker, Director of EU Operations – British Council.
Miss McClarkin said:
“I firmly believe that sport not only provides entertainment value for millions across the world but that it plays a societal role that has yet to be recognised to its full potential.
“We have seen the Olympic torch passing within 10 miles of each person in the UK, including all over the East Midlands, with communities coming together to celebrate such a special event. And combining this with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee last month, it truly is a wonderful time to be British. I hope everyone gets excited by the Games and is inspired to get active.”
