Newark Cricket Club plays host to a visit by Emma McClarkin MEP

East Midlands Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin visited Newark Cricket Club recently, to discuss their plans for the club.

Miss McClarkin, who is the Conservative Spokesperson for Sport in the European Parliament, met with members of the Cricket Club, which is currently applying for ‘Club Mark Status’ on the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Newark Cricket Club was formed on April 7th 1830, and is one of the oldest clubs in the country. The club wants to develop land alongside the main cricket field, and invited Emma to discuss their plans, along with how to access possible grants from the European Parliament, along with other funding opportunities.

Speaking following the visit, Miss McClarkin said:

“I was very pleased to visit Newark Cricket Club today. It was fascinating to hear about the long history of the club, and to know that Cricket was played here long before the formation of the club, as long ago as the 18th century.

“I was very interested to hear about their plans for the future. I wish them every success in getting grants to realise their vision for the future of the club, and would urge anyone willing to help them to get in touch with them.”

Newark Cricket Club Chairman Andrew Fearn said:

“Following our merger, we have identified the need for a second pitch and have been fortunate in acquiring a long lease on the field next to our existing ground. The next step is to ensure that it is well prepared as a surface for cricket and this, of course, requires significant expenditure. We are extremely grateful for all offers of help in pursuing opportunities for funding.”
