East Midlands MEP backs legislation to help British Farmers and consumers
11th February, 2015East Midlands MEP, Emma McClarkin, has today voted in favour of putting ‘Country of Origin’ labelling on processed meat.
Mandatory Country of Origin labelling means that processed meat products sold throughout the EU will have to be labelled showing the country that it came from. This will result in greater transparency in the food supply chain, and help to give consumers more confidence following the ‘horse meat’ scandal a few years ago.
The Conservative MEP is a great supporter of giving consumers more information about their food and where it comes from, and she believes that this legislation will help them to make better informed decisions when buying meat products.
Miss McClarkin said:
“Our farming sector here in the UK is going through a very tough time, and I hope that this legislation will help them by making it easier for consumers to choose British produce.
“I know that people want to help our farmers by buying British, so putting Country of Origin labels on processed meat products will give them more information and help them to make a more informed choice, which will hopefully help to support our British farmers.”
