Emma McClarkin MEP welcomes end to Mobile Roaming Charges
2nd July, 2015East Midlands MEP Emma McClarkin has welcomed the end of mobile roaming charges. From June 2017, mobile roaming charges will no longer apply within the EU for making calls, sending texts and using the internet.
Thanks to the efforts of the Conservatives in the European Parliament, and following late night negotiating, the deal was agreed upon on Monday evening.
Whilst the end of roaming will happen in 2017, consumers and British holidaymakers will see a significant drop in charges from next summer.
Importantly, this new agreement takes into account the complexities of the telecommunications market. It ensures that networks do not merely shift the savings made through ending roaming charges to domestic users.
Emma McClarkin MEP said:
“This is a great win for consumers across the UK; holidaymakers can go abroad and know that when they come back, they will not have to deal with a gigantic bill.”
She added: “Seven of the top ten tourist destinations for British holidaymakers are within the EU; this will make a big difference to families travelling abroad.”
