Emma McClarkin MEP joins supermarket staff for Neighbourhood Food Collection
3rd July, 2015East Midlands Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin joined staff at Tesco in Market Harborough today, helping at a food collection initiative at the supermarket.
The Neighbourhood Food Collection, which is taking place in Tesco stores across the East Midlands from 2-4 July, is to help provide much needed food for thousands of people in the area.
Tesco is working with two charities – Fareshare and The Trussell Trust – to ensure that the food gets to those who need it, and is also topping-up the donations by 30%.
Trussell Trust foodbanks provide three days of emergency food to individuals and families in crisis. Frontline care professionals including doctors and social workers refer people who are facing hunger to the foodbank.
FareShare is a unique charity fighting hunger by redistributing surplus food to hundreds of local organisations, ranging from homeless shelters to children’s breakfast clubs.
Miss McClarkin said:
“I’m so pleased to have been able to help out today at the food collection here in Market Harborough. It was great to meet Lisa, the Team Leader, and I want to thank all customers who donated for their support and generosity.
“I’m also delighted that Tesco are continuing their policy from previous years and topping up the total donations by another 30%. The Neighbourhood Food Collection is a real community-driven event which will do so much to help the least well off in the community.”
