Emma McClarkin MEP votes against EU Education Overreach
9th September, 2015Today the European Parliament voted for a report which will see the EU setting out instructions on gender issues in UK classrooms.
The Rodrigues report outlines and promotes the rights of girls to education and learning, and also marginally addresses the special educational needs of boys.
However, the file is imbalanced in its application between genders and goes further in prescribing gender-based teacher training, content of teaching materials and advising nations to make sex education compulsory in both primary and secondary schools
Emma McClarkin said:
“I am saddened to see this result. Whilst this report may seem well meant, it is not the EU’s place to direct member states on this issue. Education is and should remain the sole competence of the UK.
“I voted against this report as the EU is seeking to supplant the position of parents and families. This report shows a disregard for different cultures across Europe, it is important that these issues are dealt with by family members in a way they see fit, rather than by Brussels.”
Emma added,
“This is a debate for the UK and the Department of Education which is an ongoing process that takes account for British society and families.”
