Notts MEP Emma McClarkin visits Sneinton Town FC
22nd February, 2016A new Football club, Sneinton Town FC, hosted a visit from local Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin last Friday, in order to look at how sport provision in this area of Nottingham can be improved.
Miss McClarkin, who is the Conservative Spokesman for sport in the European Parliament, visited the current club base at the Greenway Centre, Trent Lane. She heard about the club, what opportunities it provides for local children and adults in the area, and was given a tour of the surrounding area, including the concrete pitch at the Centre and the facilities at the City College. She met with some of the club trustees and members, coaches and young people, as well as representatives from the College, including the Principal himself. All are backing development of a club in the area that can cater for the huge demand and potential that exists for football in Sneinton.
Sneinton has a population of 15,000 but has no grass football pitches. So Sneinton Town, which was set up two years ago, has to train and play on the Astro pitch at the Nottingham academy and at the meadows on Victoria embankment (a 30 min walk away). This is expensive and creates access issues for the young people wishing to join in with Saturday and Sunday football.
Miss McClarkin said:
“As Conservative spokesman for sport in the European Parliament I understand the power of football in bringing people together and giving young people the opportunity to participate in sport, which has so many other benefits in teaching skills of team work and leadership, among others.
“The need for a football team in Sneinton was very obvious during my visit here today. Having spoken to some of the people involved and seen first hand what they have, it is clear that they need some help to obtain modern, easily accessible facilities.
“I will be working to help them in any way possible to reach that goal, so that the club can go from strength to strength.”
