Emma McClarkin MEP joins EU Committee on Organised Crime
18th April, 2012East Midlands Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin has recently joined the EU Committee on Organised Crime, with the first constitutive meeting being today (Wednesday).
Miss McClarkin has called for the committee to also cover online ‘cybercrime’, as this is an increasingly growing area of organised crime.
The global illegal drug trade is with 411 billion euros each year, whereas the global cybercrime trade is fast catching up, being worth 388 billion euros per year. However cybercrime is approx. 700% more profitable, as it is easier to carry out.
Speaking about joining the Committee, Emma said:
“I’m very pleased to have joined the committee, and I hope to be able to work constructively on it on behalf of constituents and companies in the East Midlands and further afield to increase security and confidence for consumers online, greater protection for our Intellectual Property and to bolster the fight against exploitation online and increase child protection.
“I also hope that the committee will take on board my request that the mandate should also cover cybercrime, as it is a growing area of organised criminal activity which cannot be ignored.”
